Job Description:
The Betsy Lehman Center for Patient Safety is a dynamic state
agency that plays a unique role in improving health care safety and
quality in Massachusetts.Named for a Boston Globe health columnist
who died in 1994 from a preventable medical error, the Betsy Lehman
Center (the Center) is supported by and shares space with the
state's Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA).We are
seeking a talented, experienced instructional designer to help us
build a first-in-the-nation statewide health care safety curriculum
that will serve as a foundational tool for educating the health
care workers and leaders of today and the future.Health care
services are increasingly complex, and thousands of patients in
Massachusetts and across the country experience preventable harm
each day while receiving care. This curriculum will cultivate
much-needed knowledge, principles, and vocabulary unique to health
care safety for all who work in the field, from administrators at
the front desk to members of the C-suite and trustees in the board
room. You will design online coursework for the curriculum.This new
role is a part-time, contract position of approximately 15-30
hours/week with hourly flexibility, reporting to the Center's
Executive Director. The hourly rate will be $50 - $100/hour,
commensurate with experience. The contractor will primarily work
off-site, but occasional meetings in the Center's office in Boston
or elsewhere in the state may be required. The engagement will run
for at least 6 months and there is opportunity for longer-term
work.As the Center's Instructional Designer, you will:
- Develop a modular Health Care Safety 101A course: Use your
drafting, storyboarding, user-testing, and revision skills to
provide online learners with an approximately 60-minute course on
health care safety basics that are applicable to all roles in any
health care setting. We will provide curriculum content.
- Develop multiple modular Health Care Safety 101B courses:
Building on and complementing Health Care Safety 101A, you will
design courses to facilitate additional learning by individuals
based on roles (board members, executive leaders, middle
management, frontline clinical staff, frontline non-clinical
staff). Courses for additional roles or specific settings may be
added at a later date. We will provide curriculum content.
- Apply current best practices to curriculum presentation: Make
strategic use of contemporary, engaging and interactive elements
throughout, including assessments, knowledge checks and compelling
visual elements. Courses will reflect best practices in engaging
targeted audiences and meet accessibility requirements and the
needs of diverse learners.We are looking for someone who thrives in
a collaborative environment and has experience designing e-learning
courses for adult learners. Specifically, we seek an instructional
designer who is/has:
- Demonstrated success in instructional design work with an
impact on users, with at least 6 years of relevant professional
experience, including in the design, creation, and implementation
of e-learning curricula and experience working with subject matter
experts and curriculum designers.
- A degree or other formal education in Instructional Design,
Instructional Technology, Learning Design, Curriculum Development,
or other relevant academic area.
- Needed technical skills to work with current e-learning
software development tools and content standards, such as SCORM and
xAPI, and experience working with Learning Management Systems.
- Experience working independently as well as part of a small
